ICP Bard MFA thesis show
Last night I went to Brina Thurston's MFA thesis show aptly titled "After Party". The title is a particularly great one because it implied not only a party to celebrate the end of this awesome program, but also because an after party is a very special kind of event that presumes some sort of "in" ticket, a cool gather for the select few who were invited AFTER the actual party. The brilliant thing about this 'after party' was that it didn't actually follow any previous event; it was the exhibition itself and its own after party, a self-referential secret party that was entirely open to the public!
The actual show was awesome. After not following the directions, I did eventually find the alley that lead inside. I came just in time to see her dad cutting hair (a recreation of his salon on Long Island called le Jazz), some girl climbing the vagina wall, a gefilte fish beach (amazing!) and color bio diagrams of some sort that her mom made in college (??). I also saw some amazing performances. The entire experience was entirely worthwhile! The thing that MFA grads who have thesis group shows overlook is the fun factor. In fact, these days everyone seems to overlook this in our tightly knit art world. Maybe if we were less preoccupied with the boring trajectory of an art star, we could all throw after parties for ourselves and the not invite the select few of our choice.
