R Crumb - Cool Comics for Blue Chippers

It's really cute that the David Zwirner Gallery decided to give a huge solo show to R. Crumb, the cult, "underground" comic artist.  My guess is that anything "cult" and "underground"  can't stay that way for too long because blue chip galleries and their fancy pants patrons need to feel young and hip, and well, there you have it.  R. Crumb gets a solo show at the David Zwirner compound on 19th Street.

I suppose it was good.  Indeed, it had clever drawings, witty dialogues, caustic commentaries and sardonic takes on valued conventions; in short, the work and its sensibility of a critical and probably self-loathing (who has an open marriage) is precisely the kind of stuff we shouldn't see on the pristinely white walls of a premiere Chelsea space.  Crumb, what is this, some kind of tacit, reactionary retort?!!
